New car sales in Romania drop -4% year-on-year in 2021 to 121,199 units. Local behemoth Dacia (-12.9%) triples the market decline rate to see its share drop significantly, from 31.6% to 28.7%. That’s however still 3.6 times the volume of the #2, an in-form Hyundai (+39.1%) up four spots on last year. Toyota (+39.3%) is equally in outstanding shape and also gains four ranks to #3. Ford (+13.7%) fares much better than in 2020 when it lost -42% and steps up one spot to #4. In contrast, Renault (-20.9%), Skoda (-22.6%) and Volkswagen (-17.5%) skid down the charts. Mercedes (+11.5%) and Suzuki (+10.7%) also go against the negative context to improve their share. Further down, Audi (+48.4%), Volvo (+45.7%), Kia (+37.5%), Mazda (+17.8%) and BMW (+14.5%) make themselves noticed in the remainder of the Top 20.
Model-wise, the Dacia Logan enjoys a 17th consecutive year in pole position (no interruption since 2005) but freefalls -28.2% to just 10.9% share, the 2nd straight year it hits its lowest ever share in a Full Year. But more strikingly, 2021 was the year the Logan saw 198 consecutive months in first place (ever since its launch back in September 2004) come to an abrupt end when it was outsold by the Dacia Duster in March. The Duster (-7.9%) ends the year in 2nd place like in 2020. The Logan would be beaten for the monthly top spot on two more occasions in 2021: in November and December, and this time the overall market leader is the new Dacia Spring. The Spring ends the year in 5th place but held a whopping 12.9% share in December, much better than the Logan’s annual level of 10.9%. Is this the honeymoon period for the Spring that will see sales regress in 2022 or is it the start of a new dynasty in Romania? Answer in the first few months of 2022. In the annual charts, the Dacia Sandero (-12.7%) stays at #3 while the locally-produced Ford Puma (+57.4%) leaps up 6 spots on last year to #4. The Hyundai Tucson (+77.6%) and Toyota Corolla (+49.3%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10.
