Taiwan August 2021: Honda (+81.1%), Lexus (+26.3%) can’t prevent sales slide (-4.9%)
The Honda CR-V ranks #3 in Taiwan in August.
As Covid restrictions were downgraded to Stage 2, the Taiwanese new car market reduces its year-on-year fall to -4.9% to 33.148 registrations, meaning the year-to-date tally is now up just 1.5% to 293.019. Toyota (-3.2%) remains the runaway leader in the brands ranking with 27.1% share, in line with its year-to-date level. Ford (-32.1%) advances to #2 despite a ghastly year-on-year fall and climbs to #3 year-to-date. Honda (+81.1%) offsets particularly weak year-ago volumes and ends the month in 3rd place vs. #5 year-to-date. Lexus (+26.3%) also posts a solid gain to stay at #4 vs. #7 YTD. Mitsubishi (-7.4%) contains its fall and ranks 6th ahead of Nissan (-33.7%), CMC (-15.8%) and BMW (-16.9%) all in difficulty. Volkswagen (+3.7%) is the only additional gainer in the Top 10 while Mazda (+54.2%) soars and lurks just behind at #11.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is popular with Taiwanese taxi companies.
Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Corolla Cross remains head and shoulders above the competition at 8.2% share vs. 4.4% for the 2nd-ranked Toyota RAV4 (-30%). The Honda CR-V rallies back up 1068.4% to #3 overall, up two spots on July and distancing the Toyota Corolla Altis (-56%) hampered by internal competition by the Corolla Cross, and the CMC Veryca (-9.7%) down two ranks to #5. The Lexus NX (+44.1%) and Toyota Yaris (+25.7%) also post fantastic gains in the remainder of the Top 10 but the Ford Focus (-31.8%) and Kuga (-28.7%) disappoint. Below, notice the VW Tiguan (+8.1%), Nissan Sentra (+227.9%), Mazda3 (+90.5%), Mazda CX-5 (+104.7%) and Mazda CX-30 (+58.6%) scoring rare gains.
