India August 2021: Maruti Suzuki Baleno scores third ever win, market up 10.9%

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the best-selling vehicle in India in August.

New car wholesales in India gain a solid 10.9% year-on-year in August to 259.555 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up a whopping 72% to 2.131.496. Brand leader Maruti Suzuki (-8.7%) goes against the market with a significant year-on-year loss to 39.8% share vs. 45% so far this year. Hyundai (+2.3%) also trails the market but scores a strong 18.1% share vs. 17.2% year-to-date. Astoundingly, the next 10 carmakers all beat the market. Tata (+50.8%) cements its third place with a solid 10.8% share while Kia (+54.3%) is up to 6.5%, overtaking Mahindra (+17.7%) to #4. Skoda (+281.8%) and Toyota (+129.9%) score the most spectacular upticks in the remainder of the Top 10 just as Honda (+48.8%), MG (+36.8%) and Renault (+20.4%) also advance. Further down, Nissan (+1551%) is lifted by the Magnite and Jeep (+150.6%) impresses.

The Hyundai Alcazar breaks its volume record this month.

Over in the models ranking, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+45.7%) surges ahead to sign its first monthly win since March 2020 and third pole position ever (add December 2019). The Baleno distances the Maruti Suzuki Alto (-8.1%) while the Maruti Vitara Brezza (+87%) scores its first ever podium finish at #3 (previous best #4 in July, August and November 2017) and largest volume since December 2019 at 12.906. The Hyundai Creta (+7.1%) edges up one spot on July to #4 ahead of a struggling Maruti Suzuki Swift (-16%) which however remains #1 year-to-date. The Tata Nexon (+93.2%) and Maruti Suzuki Eeco (+17%) shine in the remainder of the Top 10, last month’s leader the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-30.1%) plummets down seven spots to #8 while the Kia Seltos (-19.1%) and Hyundai Venue (+1.3%) return inside the Top 10. The Kia Sonet is the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) at #12 above the Mahindra Thar at #23, the Hyundai Alcazar up 8 spots to #24 and a record 3.468 units, the Nissan Magnite at #29 and the Skoda Kushaq up 9 ranks to #31 and a record 2.904 wholesales.
