Qatar January-July 2021: Toyota Land Cruiser resists Hilux, Nissan Patrol in market up 13.5%

The Toyota Land Cruiser is still #1 in Qatar.

The Qatari new car market is up 13.5% year-on-year over the first seven months of 2021 to 22.712 units. Toyota (-14.8%) goes against the market dynamic and loses exactly ten percentage points of share as a result, going from 40.3% a year ago to 30.3% now. This is still more than double any other carmaker but a tough hit nevertheless. The remainder of the Top 5 all outpace the market: in 2nd place, Nissan (+18%) improves its share to 12.8% while Kia (+30.9%) is up to 7.5%, Mitsubishi (+29.2%) up to 6.5% and Chevrolet (+99.2%) the most impressive at 4.3% share and up 6 spots on last year to #5. Land Rover (+172%) is the biggest gainer in the Top 10 with MG (+54.5%) and GMC (+29.9%) also very strong. Geely is up to #18.

Model-wise, the Toyota Land Cruiser (-32.3%) falls below the 10% share milestone at 9.8% whereas it held 16.4% of the Qatari market a year ago. The new generation (pictured) should help contain the fall in the coming months. The Toyota Hilux (+41.4%) significantly outruns the market to stay in 2nd place above the Nissan Patrol (+91.9%) in even better shape and up one spot to #3. In contrast, the Nissan Sunny (-35%) and Toyota Hiace (-14%) struggle below. The Land Rover Defender (+532.9%) has now been around for over a year but it is still climbing the ladder, up to #6 over the first 7 months of the year. The Toyota Yaris (+20.7%) and Mitsubishi L200 (+20.4%) also perform well in the remainder of the Top 10. The Mitsubishi Xpander is the best-selling recent launch at #47 above the Geely Coolray (#51) and Kia Sonet (#63).
