Chile July 2021: Chery up to #2 brand in market up 21.5% on pre-pandemic
Chery holds 7.5% of the Chilean market in July.
New light vehicle sales in Chile soar 233.6% year-on-year in July to 38.226 units, the largest monthly volume in almost 3 years: since September 2018 (39.263). This leads to a year-to-date tally up 90.1% to 217.082. More significantly, July 2021 volumes are up 21.5% on pre-pandemic June 2019, and the year-to-date total is down just -0.6% on that of 2019 at the same stage.
Chevrolet (+170.3%) remains the best-selling carmaker in the country but sees its share thaw to just 8.7% vs. 10.5% year-to-date. The hero of the month is Chery (+2278.5%) surging up 7 spots on June to land in 2nd place overall with 7.5% of the market, the highest ranking and share ever hit by a Chinese carmaker in Chile. Toyota (+335.4%) and Hyundai (+274.7%) follow and beat the market, with Volkswagen (+279.8%) also strong in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, Changan (+338.8%), MG (+356%), Maxus (+281.9%), Dongfeng (+474.5%), KYC (+585%) and BAIC (+1552.4%) all advance faster than the market, with the Chinese share continuing to creep up, reaching 26.3% this month vs. 25.2% YTD.
Over in the models ranking, the Chevrolet Sail (+953.1%) repeats at #1 above the Chery Tiggo 2 (+1949.1%) up one spot on June to #2. The Toyota Hilux (+249.1%) rallies back up four ranks to #3, distancing the Mitsubishi L200 (+190.8%) and Suzuki Baleno (+240.5%). First Top 10 finish for the Chery Tiggo 3 up to #6 and for the MG3 (+898.3%) at #10. The Kia Soluto (#13), Suzuki S-Presso (#14) and JAC S2 (#16) climb the ladder.
