Chile February 2021: Chery (+180.6%), Maxus (+179.5%), MG (+37.7%) headline market down -2.1%

The Chilean new light vehicle market is down just -2.1% year-on-year in February to 24.492 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -13.4% to 49.476. Chevrolet (+11.4%) and Hyundai (+22.2%) swim upstream atop the brands charts and improve their share to 11.8% and 9.3% respectively, whereas Suzuki (-8.4%) and Kia (-15.2%) underperform below. MG (+37.7%) climbs to what is believed to be its first Top 5 finish in Chile at #5 just as Chery (+180.6%) almost triples its sales year-on-year to soar to #6 overall. Other Chinese brands in great shape this month include Maxus (+179.5%), KYC (+191.7%), Foton (+121.3%), BAIC (+39.6%) and Jetour (#39). All-in-all, Chinese manufacturers gain 32% year-on-year to reach 27.1% share vs. 24.6% (+8%) so far in 2021.
Over in the models ranking, two Chinese nameplates are in the lead for what is believed to be the first time in Chilean history: the MG ZS (+46.3%) tops the charts above the Chery Tiggo 2 (+216.5%). The Suzuki Baleno (+14.1%) and Kia Soluto follow above yet another Chinese vehicle: the Maxus T60 (+381.3%). The Peugeot Partner (+83.2%) and Chevrolet Spark GT (+74.4%) also post splendid gains in the remainder of the Top 10. Chilean customers currently are not only snapping up Chinese vehicles but also Chinese-made cars: the Chevrolet Groove (aka Baojun 510) breaks into the Top 10 for its first full month of sales at #9, followed by the Ford Territory at #10.
