Portugal September 2020: BMW (+34.4%) defies 7th straight market drop (-9.4%)
BMW 1 Series salers soar 226% year-on-year in September.
After stabilising in August (-0.1%) just as the whole of Europe was in doldrums (-17.6%), it’s now the turn of Portugal to return to hell (-9.4%), signing a 7th straight year-on-year drop in September at 13.186 units. This brings the year-to-date volume down -39.3% to 105.660. Renault (-16.2%) falls almost twice faster than the market but comfortably the brands top spot at 12.1% share, distancing Peugeot (-7.9%) and Mercedes (-6.6%) resisting ok. BMW (+34.4%) brilliantly scores the largest gain in the Top 15 and Citroen (-5.7%) ensures the Top 5 brands are identical to last month and YTD. Jeep (+46.5%), Audi (+45.5%), Hyundai (+31%), Honda (+12.8%) and Dacia (+10.1%) also shine further down.
Model-wise, the Renault Clio (+20.6%) bucks the negative trend to cement its domination at #5, followed like year-to-date by the Mercedes A-Class (-16.2%), Peugeot 2008 (+12.6%) and Renault Captur (-17.8%) with the Fiat Tipo (-5.2%) rounding out the Top 5. The Citroen C4 Cactus (+197.1%), Ford Fiesta (+167%), Dacia Sandero (+70.9%), Peugeot 208 (+33.9%) and Seat Leon (+18.6%) all sport fantastic gains in the remainder of the Top 10. Just outside, the BMW 1 Series (+226%), 3 Series (+82.8%) and Volvo XC40 (+81.55) also impress while the Ford Puma gains 23 spots on last month to #22 as the best-selling recent launch and the VW ID.3 lands at #55.
