Media post: The Safest Vehicles to Buy After Your Car Has Been Totaled

If you’ve been the recent victim of a distracted driver or drunk driving accident and your car has been totaled, you’re not just going to want to call your lawyer – you’re going to need a safer car.

We all expect our vehicles to provide us some level of safety in the event of a disaster, especially while we’re recovering from one. Knowing your car has the most up-to-date and efficient safety protocols will help you breathe easier, and maybe save a little money in the long run.

If you’re ready to start driving again and want safety to be your top priority, you have options. Here are the makes and models with top ratings in safety for 2020 so far, according to the IIHS.

1 – Honda

Honda models consistently rank high in safety tests, and the results of 2020 are no different. Honda 2- and 4-door sedans continue to make the IIHS Top Safety Pick lists. This year, multiple Honda Civic models scored high marks, as well as the Honda Insight.

If you’re looking for something a bit larger, the Honda Accord also received great results. The CR-V and the Odyssey are your best option for something bigger than a sedan. Honda definitely knows what they’re doing in the safety category.

2 – Hyundai

Hyundai is another brand that frequently tops the list, and this year is no exception. For sedans, the Elantra and the Veloster got high scores with optional front crash prevention, among other features. The Hyundai Sonata is a wonderful mid-size sedan.

For SUV fanatics, the Tucson and the Kona have the same optional front crash prevention and scored highly, as well. If you wanted to splurge a bit more for a luxury SUV, the Hyundai Nexo earned the ranking of Top Safety Pick +.

3 – Kia

Kia makes unique, fun vehicles with great safety ratings. You’re bound to see quite a few Kia Souls and Kia Fortes on a daily drive, and for good reason. They are fun to look at, easy to drive, and very safe. If you want something a bit bigger but still sedan-shaped, spring for the Kia Stinger.

Kia is also known for their SUVs, like the Sportage, Sorento, and Telluride. Each is unique and, of course, well-equipped for your protection.

4 – Lexus

If you’re more into the luxury brands, Lexus is your best bet. The Lexus ES-350 also earned the ranking of Top Safety Pick +, as did the NX 4-door SUV. Lexus is a more expensive option, as a luxury brand, but you also get more dang for your buck, so to speak.

The UX 4-door and the RX 4-door scored well in safety, too, if the NX isn’t your SUV style.

5 – Subaru

Subaru may not be the first brand that comes to mind, but it’s another company that makes some of the safest vehicles on the road. Five Subaru models earned a ranking of Top Safety Pick +, more than any other brand on this list: the Crosstrek Hybrid, the Legacy sedan, the Outback wagon, the Forester, and the Ascent.

The Top Safety Pick + is the highest ranking a car can receive, and Subaru has a number of other models that made the Top Safety Pick list, as well. This is a reliable brand with lots of options.

Conclusion

You can be the most safety-conscious driver in the world and a drunk driving accident could still happen. Know your legal steps in the aftermath of an accident, but also protect yourself by getting the safest vehicle you can find.
