United Arab Emirates July 2020: Nissan Patrol triumphs, Land Rover Defender in Top 35, market down -32.4%
The Nissan Patrol is the best-selling vehicle in UAE both in July and YTD.
New car sales in the United Arab Emirates drop -32.4% year-on-year in July to 10.436 units vs. 15.433 in July 2019, pulling the year-to-date tally down -28.6% to 86.770. After Q1 volumes edged down -8.7% but March was off -28.4%, UAE April sales imploded -66.4% to 5.577 vs. 16.623 in April 2019 , May sank -49.7% to 10.013 vs. 19.897 and June was down -25% to 13.276 vs. 17.700, which means July represents a slight relapse on June figures.
Toyota (-22.4%) manages to lose 10 percentage points less than the market for July, meaning its share shoots up to 38.9% vs. 34.5% YTD. Nissan (-29.4%) also outpaces the market to 19.1% share but Mitsubishi (-74.2%) is in complete freefall at just 5.1% share vs. 10.2% so far this year. It however retains the third spot above Lexus (-18.9%), Chevrolet (-33.2%), Kia (-39%) and Ford (-55.8%). Jeep (+62.1%) scores the only year-on-year gain in the Top 15 and leaps up to #9 vs. #13 so far this year, while MG (+20%) also impresses but is stuck at #17 and 1% share, well below its YTD level of #12 and 1.6%. Changan (+700%), Isuzu (+76%), Volvo (+29.2%) and Lincoln (+15.8%) also stun further down.

Model-wise, the Nissan Patrol (+42.5%) surges to the pole position both for July and year-to-date, toppling its archenemy the Toyota Land Cruiser (-26.4%) thanks to a new generation. The Toyota Hilux (-2.1%) rounds out the podium like it does YTD, distancing the Toyota Fortuner (+43.8%) in outstanding shape and the Nissan Sunny (-37.6%) in difficulty. Toyota monopolises the rest of the Top 10 bar the Mitsubishi L200 (-15.7%) ranking at #10, with the Land Cruiser Pickup (-23.3%) and Hiace (-24%) resisting best but the Camry (-46.7%) and Prado (-45%) struggling. Below, the Jeep Wrangler (+88.9%), Nissan Micra (+56.5%) and Toyota RAV4 (+23.1%) manage strong year-on-year upticks in the remainder of the Top 20. The Chevrolet Captiva, a rebadged Baojun 530, is by far the most popular recent launch in July at #15, just as the Land Rover Defender scores its first Top 50 finish at #33 ahead of the Toyota C-HR (#46) and Kia Seltos (#72).
