Thailand July 2020: Isuzu D-Max (+17.7%) discards facelifted Toyota Hilux (-25.7%), Corolla Cross lands at #11 in reeling market (-26.9%)

The Isuzu D-Max holds a mammoth 47% share of the Thai pickup segment in July.

As Thailand celebrates a full four months of new daily Covid-19 cases below 20 (since 25 April) and less than 3.400 total cases, its new vehicle market remains in shambles with July volumes down another -26.8% year-on-year to just 59.335, bringing the year-to-date tally down -35.9% to 387.939. After outselling Toyota for the first time in history in June, Isuzu (+11.9%) continues to spectacularly buck the negative trend – becoming the only gainer in the Top 7 for the month – but falls to #2 overall at 26.1% share vs. 29.5% for Toyota (-31.9%) falling faster than the market. Year-to-date, Toyota (-43.4%) free falls to 28.8% share vs. 23.6% for Isuzu, down only -11.1%. If Nissan (-20.1%) manages to outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 7, Honda (-45.3%), Mazda (-43.5%), Ford (-42.5%) and Mitsubishi (-31.1%) all implode. Below, MG (+29.7%) surges to 3.9% share, its 2nd highest after last month (4%), while Suzuki (+3.1%) also manages to edge up in the remainder of the Top 10. Peugeot (#17), Ssangyong (+120%) and Foton (+80%) also shine further down but none surpasses 0.1% share.

The facelifted Toyota Hilux has now launched in Thailand.

Like last month, we can give you exclusive access to pickup volumes for July, Thailand being recognised as the pickup capital of the world as this is where most vehicles in this segment are manufactured and then exported around the world, but not before gobbling a whopping 46% of overall Thai sales so far in 2020 (total 179.046 units). Last month had the Isuzu D-Max holding a record 55% of the segment and 26.8% of the general market, its highest since we started following Thailand monthly back in 2010. In contrast the Toyota Hilux fell to its lowest overall share since 2017 at 11%, and this slump could potentially be attributed to a changeover to a new facelifted variant.

In July, the Isuzu D-Max (+17.7%) lodges yet another double-digit surge to score a third connective win and 6th win in 2020 at 47% share of the segment and 23.3% of the overall market vs. 21% YTD. The Toyota Hilux (-25.7%), now facelifted, manages to slightly outpace the market but remains far below the D-Max at 32% of the pickup segment and 16% share overall vs. 15.2% so far in 2020. The Honda City and Mitsubishi Triton (-28.1%) round out the Top 4 like YTD, distancing the Ford Ranger (-47.1%), Toyota Yaris and Mazda2. The Toyota Corolla Cross is proving to be an instant blockbuster, landing directly at #11 overall with 2.1% share and atop the sub-compact crossover segment with a whopping 33% share.
