UK nations May 2020: Vauxhall Corsa tops Scotland and Wales, 9 nameplates score first Top 10

The Vauxhall Corsa is the best-selling vehicle in Scotland and Wales.

It’s another catastrophic month for UK nations in May, with overall UK sales down -89% year-on-year. The detail by nation is now available thanks to our partnership with SMMT, and shows England (-88.4%) at 18.244 sales and Wales (-88.7%) at 685 performing in line with the country figures but Northern Ireland (-97.1%) at 144 and Scotland (-92.1%) at 1.127 hit a lot harder almost to the level of April. Year-to-date, Wales does best at -45.5% to 19.042, followed by England at -51.1% to 441.006, Northern Ireland off -53.7% to 11.885 and Scotland down -57% to 34.816. June results will be contrasted as car dealerships were allowed to open in England on June 1, will be in Northern Ireland on June 8 but not date has been fixed yet for Scotland and Wales.

The Vauxhall Corsa tops two nations this month: it ranks #1 in Wales where it holds a mammoth 23.6% share but also Scotland, and ends the most at #3 in both England and Northern Ireland, the only nameplate to return a podium finish in all four UK nations. Justifying its UK pole position, the Tesla Model 3 is #1 in England, #2 in Scotland and #8 in Wales and the Skoda Fabia is #1 in Northern Ireland with 12.5% share. The Ford Fiesta is #2 in England, the Dacia Sandero #2 in Northern Ireland, the MG ZS #2 in Wales, the Peugeot 208 #3 in Northern Ireland and the Peugeot 308 #3 in Scotland.

Multiple nameplates score their first Top 10 finish in this atypical month: the Renault Zoe is #5 in Northern Ireland, the Volvo XC40 is #6 in England and #10 in Scotland, the Toyota RAV4 is #6 in Wales, the Mercedes GLC #7 in England, the Peugeot 2008, Range Rover and Skoda Kamiq are all equal #9 in Northern Ireland, the Audi Q2 is #9 in Scotland and the Mercedes E-Class #10 in England.
