Singapore May 2020: COVID-19 stops market to just 48 sales

Singapore had to cope with a new wave of COVID-19 cases in May.

As confirmed COVID-19 cases doubled throughout the course of May from 16.169 as of April 30 to 34.884 as of May 31 and 39.850 at the time of writing this article, the Singaporean economy ground to a halt. A strict set of movement restriction measures, collectively called a “circuit breaker”, was implemented on April 7 and in place for most of May. New car sales almost completely stopped in May to just 48 units (-99.2%) compared to 6.308 in May 2019, pulling the year-to-date tally down -54.2% to 15.429 and making Singapore the worst affected new car market in the world for May. Mercedes (-97.6%) and Toyota (-98.9%) are the only carmakers selling more than 10 units this month, with Honda (-99.4%) rounding out the podium and only 11 additional brands selling at least one vehicle for the month.
