Taiwan April 2020: COVID-19 tamed means market down just -11.1%

Mercedes repeats at #3 in Taiwan in April.

Taiwan’s outstanding response to COVID-19 has enabled the country contain the outbreak to only 436 cases and 6 deaths out of a population of 23.8 million. New car sales are down a modest -11.1% year-on-year in April to 30.822 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 3.1% to 134.868. Toyota (-1.6%) edges down and improves its share to 28.5%, a comfortable 5.354 units above Mitsubishi/CMC (-8.4%) at 11.1% share while Mercedes (+9.6%) remains at a splendid third place overall, keeping Nissan/Infiniti (-24.6%) and Honda (-32.3%) out of the podium. Ford (+3.2%) and Lexus (+5.9%) both enjoy sturdy gains whereas Volkswagen (-18.1%), BMW (-15.5%) and Mazda (-14.1%) straggle in the remainder of the Top 10. Local carmaker Luxgen (+41.7%) continues to evolve markedly above its 2019 level, even though it doesn’t crack the 1% market share barrier this month. Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Corolla Altis (-27.3%) manages to slip back above the Toyota RAV4 (-13.9%) for the first time since last December, with the CMC Veryca (-6.4%) closing the podium above the Ford Focus (+49.5%) and Toyota Sienta (+18.6%). The Mercedes GLC Class (+58%) also shines at #9.
