South Africa April 2020: COVID-19 lockdown stalls market down -98.4%
The Ford Ranger is estimated to be the best-selling vehicle in South Africa in April.
All car factories and dealerships were closed in South Africa for the entire month of April, and as a result new vehicle sales stall -98.4% to just 574 units vs. 36.787 in April 2019. Light Commercials drop -96.8% to 318 sales and a whopping 55.4% of the market vs. 26.7% a year ago whereas passenger cars sink -99.6% to 105 units and 18.3% share vs. 67.9%. Medium and heavy commercials (-92.4%) make up the rest of the market at 151 sales. The year-to-date tally is now down -31.2% to 117.830, and showrooms are now allowed to reopen but conditions under which they can remain blurry for now. Ford (-91.2%) is the only carmaker selling over 100 units in South Africa this mont at 304 and 53% share, distancing Toyota (-98.9%), Man (-62%), Iveco (-6.3%) and Suzuki (-98.7%). The Ford Ranger is estimated to be the best-selling vehicle in the country for the month.
