The Malaysian new car market edges up 1.4% year-on-year in February to 40.403 registrations, however due to a weak result in January (-12%), the year-to-date tally remains in frank negative at -5.9% to 83.055. Perodua (+9.8%) is boosted by the facelifted Bezza sedan and reaches a stunning 46.8% share, its second-highest ever below the 51.1% it hit in May 2018. Proton (+88.8%) doubles down on its spectacular recovery, hitting 24.7% share this month – roughly 1 in every 4 vehicles registered, its highest level since 2013 at a time when it was leading its home market and a striking bounce back from the low of 8.4% share it fell to less than two years ago in March 2018. Mazda (+58.3%), Mitsubishi (+39%), Isuzu (+37.7%) and Volkswagen (+13.1%) all outpace the market also, but Honda (-70.7%), Toyota (-14.9%), Nissan (-5.7%) and Ford (-1.7%) recede.
