New car sales in Spain put an end to 6 consecutive years of growth in 2019 at -2.4% to 1.302.963 units, the first year-on-year decline since 2012. As it has been the case both in 2017 and 2018, business sales are the most dynamic in Spain in 2019 with a 5.9% uptick to 441.124 units and 33.9% share vs. 31.2% a year ago, with rental sales also up at +1.8% to 242.317 and 18.6% share vs. 17.8% in 2018. In fact, the entire Spanish market is down in 2019 because of poor registrations to private customers down -8.9% to 619.522 units, seeing its share dive below the symbolic 50% for the first time to 47.5% vs. 51% in 2018, 52.5% in 2017, 54.3% in 2016 and 56.6% in 2015.

The Seat Leon scores a 6th consecutive annual win at home.

Big change in the brands ranking: Peugeot (+12.1%) improves its share by more than one percentage point to 8.7% and leaps two spots on 2018 to land in pole position, knocking Seat (+3.5%) and Volkswagen (-8.4%) down. This is the first time in Spanish history that Peugeot ends the year as the most popular carmaker, having ranking within the Top 6 without interruption since our first Spanish brands data in 1985, but never finishing on top until 2019. Leader in 2017, Renault (-10.2%) continues to implode but manages to get stuck at #4 like in 2018, holding off Citroen (+17.9%) which delivers the largest gain in the Top 22. Only Toyota (+0.7%) manages an uptick in the remainder of the Top 10, with Kia (-12.2%), Opel (-8.6%) and Ford (-8.4%) hit the hardest. Below, notice Tesla (+531.1%), Cupra (+221%), Lamborghini (+144.4%), McLaren (+100%), Alpine (+44.4%), Aston Martin (+23.5%), Lexus (+19.7%), Porsche (+16.3%), Bentley (+14.8%), Mitsubishi (+11.8%) and 2018 newcomers DR Motor (#39) and Dongfeng Sokon (#42) stepping into the Top 45.

The Dacia Sandero topped the monthly charts 5 times in 2019, the most of any nameplate.

Model-wise, the Seat Leon (+2.7%) manages an outstanding 6th consecutive annual win, ranking #1 four times vs. just 3 in 2018. Up two spots to #2 overall less than 2.000 sales below the Leon, the Dacia Sandero (+8.9%) ranked #1 five times this year, the most of any nameplates, and climbs onto the Spanish podium for the first time ever after ranking #4 in 2015 and 2018. The Nissan Qashqai (-3.6%) remains at #3, scoring two monthly wins, ahead of the Renault Clio (-11.3%) up one spot to #4 despite a steep fall, scoring one monthly win. Despite a last minute surge in December (#2), the Seat Ibiza (-20.1%) falls 3 spots to #5, the first time it doesn’t rank on the Spanish podium since 1994. It’s truly the end of an era, as the crossover it is based on, the Arona (+29.8%), ends the year only 3 sales below, breaking into the annual Top 10 for the first time at #6. The Citroen C3 (+4.1%) and Peugeot 3008 (+2%) are also up in the remainder of the Top 10.

The Seat Arona scores its first Top 10 finish, peaking at #2 in June.

Further down, the Peugeot Rifter (+519.5%) and Citroen Berlingo (+400.8%) are the main culprits behind their respective brands’ stellar performance this year, with other Top 50 performers including the Opel Crossland X (+54.2%), VW T-Roc (+51.4%), Jeep Renegade (+37.1%), Toyota RAV4 (+36.2%), Hyundai Kona (+35.8%), Opel Grandland X (+24.9%), Kia Cee’d (+23.5%), Ford Kuga (+21.8%) up to a record #7 in November and #4 in December, Mercedes A-Class (+15.7%), Kia Stonic (+15.4%) and Dacia Duster (+10.7%). The Toyota Corolla (#26) easily tops 2019 launches, peaking at #6 in November and distancing the Citroen C5 Aircross (#51), VW T-Cross (#68), Lexus UX (#105), Kia Xceed (#116), Skoda Scala (#126), Tesla Model 3 (#136) and Mazda CX-30 (#143).
