In a difficult economic and political context, sales of new locally-made vehicles in Pakistan sink -26.4% year-on-year in 2019 to just 187.714, the lowest annual tally since 2014. Note this is a pretty accurate representation of the most popular new cars in the country as imports remain limited due to very high duties. Suzuki (-19.2%) resists much better than the market, resulting in a share improved to 59.4%. Toyota (-28.4%) is down to 25% and Honda (-43.7%) freefalls to 15.3% vs. 20% in 2018. Isuzu (0.4%) is new and JAC (+22.2%) improves to a still tiny 0.2%. Model-wise, even though the Toyota Corolla (-25%) secures an 11th consecutive annual win, it is the last one because the all-new Suzuki Alto, the replacement for the tremendously successful Suzuki Mehran (-58.7%), landed in June and immediately reached gargantuan shares, peaking at 41.7% in September which is the highest monthly market share reached by any nameplate in Pakistan in over 10 years, since the Toyota Corolla hit 42.1% in April 2009.
