New Zealand Full Year 2019: Ford Ranger secures 5th consecutive win in market down -4.3% to lowest in 3 years

2019 brings an end to a run of five consecutive record years in New Zealand, with sales down -4.3% to 154.479 units, the lowest annual volume since 2016. SUVs edge up 0.3% to 67.676 and see their share grow from 41.8% in 2018 to 43.8% this year. Light Commercials (mainly pickup trucks) drop -4.7% to 43.871 and 28.4% share vs. 28.5% and Passenger Cars sink -10.7% to 35.997 and 23.3% share vs. 25% a year ago. Toyota (-4.2%) almost exactly matches the market’s evolution to keep its share at a round 20%, now over double the #2 Ford (-9.8%) at 9.6%. Mitsubishi (+4.1%) overtakes Holden (-7.9%) to climb onto the podium, with Mazda (-10.1%) rounding out the Top 5 like last year. In fact the remainder of the Top 10 is unchanged on 2018, with Nissan (+4.4%), Hyundai (+3.1%) and Kia (+2.7%) solid with gains but Volkswagen (-16.1%) straggling mightily. Further down, MG (+6710%), Ram (+245.5%), Tesla (+215.7%), Great Wall (+58.4%), Mahindra (+36.6%), Jaguar (+35.4%), Mini (+22.8%), Haval (+22.5%), Ssangyong (+19.9%), Porsche (+19.5%), Citroen (+19.3%) and Land Rover (+15%) impress further down.
Model-wise, the Ford Ranger (-4.2%) easily holds onto the pole position for the 5th year in a row above the Toyota Hilux (-11.9%) and Corolla (-6.8%). The Toyota RAV4 (+13%) and Mitsubishi Triton (+12.7%) post the only double-digit gains in the Top 10 and round out the Top 5 like in 2018. In fact, the entire Top 10 models remain unchanged on last year, but only the Holden Colorado (+3.6%) manages to improve its sales year-on-year. Further down, the Mitsubishi Outlander (+18%) misses out on a Top 10 finish for just 37 sales, with the Hyundai Tucson (+32.3%), Nissan Qashqai (+19.7%), Nissan X-Trail (+13%), Mazda BT-50 (+12.1%) and Mitsubishi ASX (+9.6%) among the most dynamic. Up to #7 overall and #1 private passenger car in September, the Tesla Model 3 fails to make it into the 2019 Top 30. The Toyota Corolla (-14.5%) dominates the rentals charts head and shoulders with volumes equivalent to 58.6% of its total. In fact Toyota monopolises the Top 4 rentals with the RAV4, Camry and Yaris in tow. The Holden Trax (+61.5%) is up to #5, the Nissan Qashqai lands at #6 and the Toyota Fortuner at #11.
