Chile September 2019: Hyundai on top, Mitsubishi (+15.2%) strong, MG (+68.8%) up to record #12

MG breaks its Chilean ranking record to #12 in September.

The August 2019 article has now been updated with the Top 25 models.

12/11 update: Now with the Top 20 models.

The Chilean new car market endures a 7th year-on-year drop in the past 8 months in September at -3.4% to 37.925 units, however this is the largest monthly volume in a year, which is encouraging. The year-to-date tally is now down -7% to 289.478. Hyundai (+3.7%) ignores the surrounding gloom to leap up 3 spots on August and secure its first win of the year at 8.7% share vs. 7.4% YTD. Chevrolet (+5.4%) is knocked down to #2, distancing Toyota (-18.3%) in great difficulty. Mitsubishi (+15.2%) is the standout performer atop the ranking, the only Top 10 brand managing a double-digit year-on-year gain. Peugeot (+8.9%), Nissan (+3.7%) and Kia (+3.4%) are also in positive whereas Ford (-23.7%), Suzuki (-19.3%) and Mazda (-10.9%) skid down spectacularly. Beyond the Top 10, MG (+68.8%) posts an extravagant gain to reach an all-time high 12th spot, with Brilliance (+53.8%), Changan (+39.3%), Dongfeng (+21.1%), the Great Wall group (+20.2% and JAC (+11.8%) confirming the Chinese are Chile’s darlings, almost monopolising all double-digit gains in market, leaving crumbs to BMW (+46.5%), Opel (+34.7%), Jaguar (+23.5%) and Volvo (+15.8%). All-in-all, Chinese carmakers are up 8% year-on-year in September to 15.2% share.
