South Africa October 2018: Toyota Hilux & Yaris strong, market up 1.7%

New vehicle sales in South Africa slide up 1.7% year-on-year in October to 51.866 units, reducing the year-to-date drop to -0.5% at 464.742 deliveries. Toyota (+8%) and the VW Group (+14%) comfortably outpace the market to cement their domination, adding up to 43% of the market. Below, Hyundai-Kia (-20%) and Ford (-14%) struggle but Renault (+10%), Mazda (+6%) and the BMW Group (+3%) do well. Among smaller manufacturers, Porsche (+98%), Volvo (+71%) and Suzuki (+21%) stand out. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+35%) widens the gap with its direct YTD followers the Ford Ranger (-2%) and VW Polo Vivo (+4%) while the VW Polo (+45%) continues to be bolstered by the new generation at #3 and the Nissan NP200 (+39%) surprises with another sizeable leap despite its age. The Toyota Yaris celebrates the one anniversary of its new generation with a record 7th place overall, with the Hyundai Grand i10 (146%), VW Tiguan (+104%), Ford Figo (+78%), Renault Sandero (+70%) and Kwid (+43%) also impressive. The Toyota Rush (#27) is up 17 spots to remain the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) ahead of the Isuzu MU-X (#46), Hyundai Kona (#61) and Isuzu D-Max (#66).
