Sweden May 2018: Volvo V90 unbeatable in record market

The Volvo V90 is the undisputed leader at home in 2018.

The Swedish new car market gains 6.7% year-on-year to post a new all-time record for May at 37.687 units, lifting the year-to-date volume up 2.6% to 159.299, also a record. Homegrown brand leader Volvo is in difficulty this month at -9% to 17.4%, a full 4 percentage points below its YTD level of 21.4% (+7%). In contrast its immediate followers Volkswagen (+18%), Kia (+16%) and Toyota (+18%) all vastly outperform the market, with Fiat (+26%), Skoda (+21%), Renault (+12%), BMW (+9%) and Mercedes (+9%) also outpacing the overall growth in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Alfa Romeo (+646%), Ssangyong (+350%), Lamborghini (+233%), Jaguar (+135%), Ferrari (+100%), Jeep (+64%), Seat (+40%), Dacia (+35%), Mini (+27%), Porsche (+21%), Mazda (+20%) and Subaru (+17%) also impress.

Over in the models ranking, the Volvo S/V90 (+18%) posts a 7th consecutive month in pole position, widening the gap with the #2, the VW Golf (+11%) to an unsurmountable 6.280 at 13.596 (+39%) vs. 7.316 (-4%). The Volvo XC60 (-34%) is hot hard at #3 while Volkswagen also places the Passat (+10%) and Tiguan (+39%) inside the May Top 5, relegating the Volvo S/V60 (-5%), about to be renewed, to #6. In the lead-up to summer, the Fiat Ducato (+16%) fills up on campervan-ready sales at an impressive 7th place while the Toyota C-HR (+90%), Skoda Octavia (+48%), Toyota Yaris (+39%) and Renault Clio (+17%) also score generous year-on-year gains inside the Top 15. It’s not a good month for new launches, with the Volvo XC40 down 7 spots on April to #16 (taking down the Volvo V40 with it at -51%) and the VW T-Roc down 9 to #36 while the Seat Arona is up 9 to #45.
