Vietnam February 2018: Toyota Vios up 49% to 12.4% share, market down 30%

The Toyota Vios cements its domination in Vietnam with a 49% year-on-year gain.

After a 28.7% surge in January, new vehicle sales in Vietnam take a hit in February at -29.7% to 12.394 registrations, mainly due to the different timing of the Lunar New Year in 2018 (February instead of January). Year-to-date, Vietnamese sales are up 1.5% to 38.431 units. Thaco-Kia remains the most popular manufacturer in the country, but just: down 51% to 23.4% share it ends February only 34 sales above Toyota at 23.1% (-20%). Note Thaco-Kia owes its impressive share in Vietnam to medium/heavy commercial vehicles accounting for 48% of its sales in February and 45% YTD. Without trucks, Kia would rank #3 brand. Mazda continues to impress with a 10% year-on-year gain to 16.2% share leading to a 18.3% YTD share, distancing Ford (-44%), Chevrolet (-15%) and Honda (-8%). Peugeot (+996%), Mitsubishi (+23%) and Suzuki (+15%) also post positive results this month.

The Mazda CX-5 is up 107% to #2 so far in in 2018.

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Vios is more dominant than ever thanks to deliveries shooting up 49% year-on-year to 12.4% share vs. 10.4% year-to-date. The Mazda CX-5 also sails off with a 86% year-on-year surge to 6.9% share and up 107% YTD. The Toyota Innova (-23%), Ford Ranger (-22%) and Mazda3 (-27%) round up the Top 5, losing slightly less ground than the market. In the remainder of the Top 10, the Kia Cerato (+58%), Toyota Corolla (+49%) and Honda City (+21%) all stun with double-digit gains. Further down, the Mitsubishi Outlander (+120%), Chevrolet Colorado (+74%) and Mazda2 (+51%) also make themselves noticed.
