Portugal September 2017: VW Golf remains #1 in market up 6.4%

The VW Golf is the best-seller in Portugal for the 2nd month running.

New car sales in Portugal are up 6.4% year-on-year in September to 14.857 units, lifting the year-to-date tally up 7.9% to 171.552 sales. Renault remains the most popular carmaker in the country despite a 2% drop to 10.3% share, distancing Peugeot up 9% to 9.8%. Mercedes is up 4% to a stunning 8.9% share, snapping the #3 spot YTD off Volkswagen, down 7% to 7.4%. BMW (+1%) rounds up the Top 5 ahead of Nissan (+3%) while Citroen (+19%), Opel (+23%) and Ford (+28%) post the largest year-on-year gains in the Top 10. Further down, Mini (+25%), Land Rover (+30%), Fiat (+36%), Kia (+37%), Porsche (+92%), Suzuki (+93%) and Jeep (+307%) are the most impressive.

Model-wise, the VW Golf is the best-seller for the second consecutive month thanks to deliveries up 22% to 3.8% share vs. 2.4% year-to-date but remains #8 so far in 2017. Renault places two nameplates on the podium: the Megane (+21%) and Clio (-28%) remaining by far the #1 model this year. The Peugeot 308 is up 14 spots on August and 26% year-on-year to #4, the Nissan Qashqai is up 20% to #5 and now ranks #4 YTD, the Citroen C3 is up 41% to #7 and the Ford Focus up 95% to #8. Notice also the Mercedes CLA up 38% to #12, the BMW 5 Series up 153% to #17 and the Peugeot 3008 up 555% to #23. The Opel Crossland (#40) leads recent launches (<12 months) ahead of the Toyota C-HR (#46), Renault Kadjar (#71) and Audi Q2 (#76). We welcome the Citroen C3 Aircross (#114), Jeep Compass (#155), Kia Stinger (#174) and Seat Arona (#206) in the Portuguese ranking this month.
