This is it: with a fifth year-on-year decline in the past six months in September at -11.5% to 116.368 units, the Mexican new car market swerves into negative territory year-to-date at -1.1% to 1.106.935 sales, still the 2nd best volume in history at this stage of the year. The Top three best-selling carmakers all drop faster than the market, indicating a fragmentation of sales in Mexico: Nissan is down 16% to 24.2% share, Chevrolet down 25% to 14.8% and Volkswagen down 14% to 12.7%. Toyota resists better at -8% in 4th place but the hero of the month is once again new local producer Kia, up a whopping 27% on September 2016 to hit its largest ever monthly volume at 7.503 units (only 8 below Toyota) and largest ever market share at 6.4%. Sister company Hyundai is the only other carmaker in positive in the Top 10 at +24%. Further down, Renault (+6%), Ram (+7%), Mercedes (+7%), Mitsubishi (+7%), Fiat (+8%), Jeep (+22%), Peugeot (+29%) and Suzuki (+39%) shine.
First podium ranking for the Chevrolet Beat.
In the models ranking, the Nissan Versa (-9%) and Pickup (-4%) remain in the lead and fall slightly slower than the market but the best performance atop the charts is delivered by the Chevrolet Beat, up one spot on August to land on the Mexican podium for the very first time with a record 5.235 sales and 4.5% share. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Aveo is hit full frontal by this success (-46%). The other great performer in the Top 10 is the Kia Rio more than doubling its sales year-on-year (+105%) to land at a best-ever #8 with a record 2.3% share but its volume isn’t a new record. Second consecutive month inside the Top 10 for the Ford Figo (-10%), record #12 ranking for the Nissan Kicks (also hit last March), excellent second month of sales for the Hyundai Accent up 13 spots to #21 while the Chevrolet Cavalier is up 11 to #70.
Previous month: Mexico August 2017: Chevrolet Beat up to #4, Accent and Cavalier land
One year ago: Mexico September 2016: Chevrolet Aveo edges past Nissan Versa to #1
