New light vehicle sales in Thailand are up a meagre 0.6% in May to 66.425 registrations, however the year-to-date total remains frankly in positive at +12.4% to 340.182 units. Market leader Toyota freefalls 20% to 26.9% share with Isuzu getting closer in 2nd place thanks to a moderate 5% fall to 18.3%. Honda gains 2% to 15.1%, but it’s below that we witness some very solid increases: Mitsubishi (+21%), Nissan (+23%), Ford (+43%) and Mazda (+13%) all post double-digit gains far above the market growth and improve their market share drastically. It’s definitely smaller brands that spruced the market into slight positive this month, with Chevrolet (+34%), Mercedes (+51%), MG (+44%), BMW (+54%), Hyundai (+25%), Kia (+130%) and Volvo (+48%) all posting spectacular improvements.
Honda CR-V sales are up 286% year-on-year in May thanks to the new model.
Model-wise, the Isuzu D-Max impresses and keeps the Toyota Hilux at bay with deliveries down 6% to 14.9% share vs. -20% to 13.3% for the Hilux. The Ford Ranger surges 46% to remain on a podium now 100% composed of pickup trucks. The Toyota Yaris snaps the passenger car crown off the Honda City despite sales down 3% year-on-year vs. +31% for the City. The Mitsubishi Triton (+44%) makes it four pickups in the Top 6 and the Mazda2 (+32%) continues to surprise. Outside the Top 10, the Honda CR-V is boosted up 4-fold on May 2016 thanks to the new generation, with the Nissan March (+198%) also benefiting from a welcome new gen spike. Among recent launches, the Nissan Note is up 11 spots on April to #25 and the Toyota Sienta is down two to #28.
