Netherlands May 2017: VW Up snaps top spot in market up 27%

The VW Up is the best-selling nameplate in the Netherlands in May.

New car sales in the Netherlands are up by a very impressive 27% year-on-year in May to 36.484 registrations, lifting the year-to-date tally up 20% to 185.381 units. The two market leaders beat the market with even more impressive gains: Volkswagen is up 41% to 11% share and Renault is up 29% to 10.4%, reproducing the year-to-date order. On the other hand Peugeot (+9%) and Opel (-12%) lose market share in third and fourth positions respectively. Toyota at #5 (+70%) and Kia at #7 (+83%) also frankly outpace the market this month. Outside the Top 10, Volvo (+34%), Audi (+44%), Hyundai (+35%), Mercedes (+40%), Nissan (+63%) and Suzuki (+64%) make themselves notice while among smaller brands Tesla (+670%) and Alfa Romeo (+252%) are the most dynamic.

The Kia Picanto ranks #2 in the Netherlands this month. 

The VW Up! more than doubles its sales year-on-year (+107%) to snap up the pole position of the Dutch models ranking this month, cementing its 2nd place year-to-date. It is followed by another microcar, the Kia Picanto, up an even more extravagant 206%, consolidating the third place it holds so far in 2017. #1 year-to-date and in April, the Renault Clio drops 9% to #3 this month, distancing the VW Golf (+10%) back up 8 spots to #4 and he Opel Astra (-1%). Below, a series of eight consecutive nameplates beat the market, with the Toyota Yaris (+74%), Nissan Qashqai (+93%) and Renault Megane (+185%) being the best performers. Notice also the Citroen C3 (+212%), Peugeot 3008 (up 23-fold), Hyundai Tucson (+163%) and VW Tiguan (+654%) posting spectacular gains. The Volvo V90 (#25) dominates recent launches ahead of the Toyota C-HR (#29) and Suzuki Ignis (#57).
