Europe November 2016: Renault up 18%, Captur best-selling SUV

The European new car market (29 countries, Turkey and Russia excluded) remains dynamic in November at +5% to 1.184.140 registrations, with year-to-date sales up 6.8% to 13.937.339, the largest YTD gain since 2007. The Seasonally Adjusted Annual Sales Rate (SAAR) hits 15.1 million in November. All Top 5 markets are up, with Spain (+13%) and France (+8%) leading the way followed by Italy (+5%), the UK (+3%) and Germany (+1.5%). 26 out of 29 markets are up, only the Netherlands (-21%), Ireland (-20%) and Switzerland (-0.4%) in decline.

Volkswagen remains the most popular brand in the region by far, despite sales down 0.9%. It is followed by Renault up a fantastic 18.5% on November 2015, Ford (-0.5%) and Opel (-0.3%). Another outstanding performance from Mercedes up two spots on last month and 12% year-on-year to 5th place overall with 70.095 sales. BMW does even better at +13% and 68.511 units. Both luxury brands overtake Peugeot (-1.5%) but Audi isn’t as lucky: up 6% to #8. Skoda (+9%), Toyota (+9%), Hyundai (+11%), Dacia (+8%), Seat (+25%), Suzuki (+22%) and Mini (+17%) also impress in the Top 20. Further down, Bentley (+53%), Jaguar (+57%), Infiniti (+181%) and Rolls Royce (+106%) soar.

Model-wise, the VW Golf drops 8% but keeps a 10.000-unit advantage over the Renault Clio up a stunning 21% year-on-year and two spots on October to #2, reclaiming the #3 spot year-to-date. The VW Polo (+6%) and Ford Fiesta (+5%) follow, ahead of the Opel Astra up 35%. The Renault Captur surges 20% to #9 and becomes the best-selling SUV on the continent, outpacing the VW Tiguan at #10 (+55%) and the Nissan Qashqai at #11 (+8%). All planets are aligning for Renault: the Mégane is up 98% to #15 and the Kadjar is up 18% to #33. Notice also the Dacia Duster up 26%, the Citroen C3 up 18%, Audi A4 up 44%, Hyundai Tucson up 32%, Kia Sportage up 24%, Peugeot 3008 up 83% and BMW X1 up 68%.
