The Indonesian new car market is up by a very shy 0.1% year-on-year in September to 93.136 registrations, yet the year-to-date tally is up 2.5% to 783.450 units, keeping the hopes of ending 2016 above 1 million units alive. After ending the decade-long reign of the Toyota Avanza last month, we were expecting the Toyota Calya to sail off into the sunset and never look back. Not so. Granted, the Calya posts a 2nd consecutive month in the Indonesian pole position but at 8.832 sales it is only 20 units above the Avanza (-46%). The tremendous initial success of the Calya may be the culprit here with assembly lines struggling to keep up with demand.
The next few months will tell us whether we are headed towards a clear Calya leadership or a tight battle for domination between the two nameplates. The Daihatsu Sigra for its part climbs onto the overall podium for the first time at #3 with 5.721 units, distancing the Toyota Kijang Innova (+39%) and Honda Brio Satya (+45%) both delivering spectacular year-on-year gains. The Toyota Sienta remains strong at #6, the Daihatsu Xenia resists at +13% and reclaims the #5 YTD spot off the Daihatsu Ayla, the Toyota Fortuner is robust at #11 and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is back inside the Top 20 at #19.
