United Arab Emirates January-July 2016: Land Cruiser takes charge

Reflecting an overall gloomy trend in the Middle-East, new light vehicles in the United Arab Emirates are down a steep 20% year-on-year over the first 7 months of 2016 to 189.084 units. Toyota maintains its stranglehold on the market, selling almost double any other carmaker around with 56.983 units and 30.1% share vs. 30.019 and 15.9% for #2 Nissan. Mitsubishi falls 33% to 11.1% in third place above BMW, stunning at -2% and 6% share vs. 4.9% a year ago, Hyundai (-15%), Ford (-23$) and Lexus (-5%) round up the Top 5 with Infiniti (+1%), Dodge (+6%), Peugeot (+21%), Jaguar (+9%), Volvo (+12%) and Geely (+2600%) the only Top 30 carmakers posting year-on-year gains. Ram (#31), SAIC-MG (#33) and Opel (#35) also leap up.

In the models ranking, thanks to sales down just 2% due to the arrival of the new generation, the Toyota Land Cruiser takes the lead of the UAE sales charts with 10.926 sales and 5.8% share, overtaking the Toyota Hilux at 9.195 (-29%) and the Mitsubishi Lancer EX at 8.517 (-37%). The Nissan Patrol (-19%), Mitsubishi Pajero (-16%) and Toyota Prado (-23%), all evolve roughly in the same category as the market leader but all fall sharply. The only nameplates managing a year-on-year sales gain inside the Top 20 are the Toyota Camry (+5%), Fortuner (+9%), Lexus LX (+2%) and Nissan X-Trail (+61%). Helping the brand achieve the 4th spot detailed above, the BMW X4 is up 182% to #32 and the 7 Series up 5-fold on the previous generation to #33. The Hyundai Creta lands at #36, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport at #69 and the Suzuki Vitara at #165. Full sales charts are below.
