New car sales in Malaysia plunge 28% year-on-year in July to 42.471 registrations, pulling the year-to-date tally down 17% to just 317.930 units. Market leader Perodua manages to limit its fall to -16% to maintain a mammoth 35.6% market share while Honda does even better at -7% to 18.4% share. Toyota falls faster than the market at -31% to 11.8% share but the main victim of the July sales slump in Malaysia is once-leader Proton, down an abysmal 64% to just 3.866 deliveries and 9.1% share vs. 12.5% so far in 2016. Isuzu (-11%), Mercedes (-11%) and BMW (-2% resist the best in the Top 10 while outside, Subaru posts an insolent 348% year-on-year gain to surge to #11 overall with 591 sales. Kia (+44%), Mini (+22%), Volvo (+209%), Renault (+32%), Porsche (+12%) and Chery (+28%) are among the few carmakers to lodge positive results this month.
