Thanks to a partnership with CE Auto newsletter, we can now share with you a monthly update about the Iranian new car market. The period covered roughly corresponds to July 2016, but the Persian calendar works slightly differently: the month in question is the fourth month (Tir) of the Persian year 1395. Also, this update combines production figures for local manufacturers with exclusive import sales data obtained with Iranian customs. In Tir 1395/July 2016, 95.328 cars were produced locally (608.095 YTD), 6.233 pickups (50.063) and 5.629 imported vehicles were sold (32.762 so far in 2016). That’s a total of 107.190 vehicles for the month and 696.549 year-to-date.
Chery kick started Iranian assembly of the Arrizo 5 just 3 months after its Chinese launch.
Peugeot maintains its stranglehold on the Iranian market with a round 33% share thanks to over 35.000 units produced this month, ahead of the two main Iranian manufacturers Saipa (26.8%) and Iran Khodro (12.4%). These Top 3 carmakers hold a mammoth 72.2% of the Iranian market this month. Renault (9.1%) follows while just below Chery cements its newfound position as the most popular Chinese brand in Iran – a title that was held by JAC in 2015. In July and only 3 months after its launch at home in China, Chery kick started the local assembly of the Arrizo 5 in Iran – it ranks #20 among local cars with 261 units. Brilliance is moving up at #6 and 2.5% share vs. #8 YTD and #13 in 2015, JAC is #9, Lifan #13, Zotye #16, Changan #19, Dongfeng #20 and Haima #21. All-in-all, Chinese nameplates represent over 10.600 units in Iran in July or just under 10% market share.
Zamyad Z24 – the best-selling pickup in Iran this month.
Model-wise, the valiant Sapia Pride remains the favourite choice of Iranian car buyers with another 21.000 units produced, distancing the Peugeot 405 (13.700), 206 (11.200) and Pars (10.500). The Iran Khodro Samand rounds up the Top 5 and the Renault Tondar 90 (a first generation Dacia Logan) overtakes the Saipa Tiba for #6 overall.
Lifan sold 45 times more 820 sedans in Iran than in China this month…
The JAC S5 is the #1 Chinese models at #9 above the Brilliance H330 (#10), Chery QQ3 (#13), Fulwin 2 (#14) and Tiggo 5 (#16). The Lifan 820 continues to gear up: it ranks #18 with 583 units produced in Iran vs. just 13 units sold in China at the same time… In the pickup aisle, it’s a surprise at the helm: the Zamyad Z24 outpaces the all-new Iran Khodro Arisun, confirming a rocky start for the nameplate that has the daunting task of replacing the tremendously successful Bardo.
The Hyundai Santa Fe is by far the #1 import in Iran.
