New car sales are up a stunning 14% in 2015 to 15.087 registrations in Martinique, a French overseas island located in the Caribbean Sea. This is the best year since 2011 and the largest year-on-year gain since 2010. The record year here remains 2005 at 17.900 sales. Renault snaps up the brands pole position with 14.6% share, unsettling Peugeot (13.3%) thanks to rental sales that represent 28% of the total market here. Renault’s distributor on the island, Groupe Bernard Hayot, owns the three largest rental companies and has boosted the brand’s sales to #1. Without rentals, Peugeot would be the leader.

We also find the same situation in the models ranking where the Renault Clio (+44%) takes the lead away from the Peugeot 208 (+22%) but would remain #2 without sales to rental companies. Low-cost brand Dacia manages a very impressive podium ranking like in 2014 with 7.6% share ahead of Volkswagen, Kia and Opel. Citroen (-27%) falls from #4 to #7 but Hyundai (+33%) gains three spots to #8. Note the Hyundai ix35 and its replacement the Tucson lead the SUV market above the Dacia Duster, a very different situation than in metropolitan France.
