For the first time in the history of BSCB we have complete annual data for Laos: 52.825 new light vehicles found a buyer in the country in 2015. Sales are dominated by Toyota at 41.4% market share, but in 2nd place we have a surprise: Daehan. The Daehan brand was launchd by a Hyundai/Kia dealership called Kolao Holdings founded by a Korean but registered as a Lao company. Under this brand, 1 tonne CKD pickup trucks are assembled locally to great success: the Super-1 pickup launched in September 2013 and the D-100, D-150, D-200 and D-T1 have followed since, adding up to 9.303 sales and a gigantic 17.6% market share in Laos in 2015…
Local brand Daehan shoots up to a splendid 17.6% share in 2015.
This means Toyota and Daehan add up to 59% of the Lao market in 2015. Way below we find Hyundai (4.5%), Chevrolet (3.9%), Dongfeng and Nissan (both at 3.6%). Chery (#10), JAC (#12), BYD (#13), Foton (#16), Geely (#17), Great Wall (#18) and GAC Gonow (#20) all fit within the Top 20 with Chinese manufacturers holding 12.3% of the Lao market this year. The Toyota Hilux is ultra-dominant, even more so than in neighbouring Thailand where it is manufactured: it holds a gargantuan 28.5% of the Lao market all on its own in 2015, distancing the Toyota Hiace (9.7%), Daehan D-100 (6.6%), Daehan Super-1 (6%) and Dongfeng mini pickup (3.3%). Notice also the Ford Ranger at #8, the Chery QQ at #10, Foton Tunland at #15 and Geely Panda at #25.
