The South African new vehicle market is down 3% year-on-year in May to 47.868 registrations, pulling the year-to-date total down 1.3% to 252.383 units. As far as manufacturers are concerned, Toyota (16.8%), Volkswagen (15.8%) and Ford (14%) continue to dominate while GM/Isuzu (9.8%) overtake Hyundai-Kia (9%) with Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, Renault and Chrysler rounding up the Top 10. Atop the models ranking, the Ford Ranger manages a second consecutive month in pole position thanks to 3.039 sales, outpacing the Toyota Hilux at 2.608 deliveries and cementing its 2015 leadership at 14.684 units vs. 14.040 for the Hilux. The VW Polo also spends a second month in the passenger car lead, but just: at 1.879 deliveries it sells just 3 units more than the VW Polo Vivo, still #1 year-to-date at 11.845 sales vs. 10.102 for the Polo.
After dropping to #11 in April, the Ford Ecosport brilliantly jumps back into the South African Top 10 at a best-ever 9th position, a ranking it also reached in January and February this year. The hero newcomer this month is the Renault Captur landing directly at #20 with just under 1% market share and instantly becoming the French carmaker’s best-seller above the Sandero (#22) and Duster (#25). A handful of other recent launches make themselves noticed in South Africa this month: for their first full month in market, both the Jeep Renegade and the Land Rover Discovery Sport manage to break into the Top 50 at #39 and 210 sales and #45 and 183 units respectively while the Opel Mokka does so for its third month at #41 with 203 deliveries.
