Spain May 2014: Seat Ibiza and Leon cement domination

The Spanish new car market continues to revive: up 17% year-on-year in May to 82,584 registrations, the best month of May since 2010 and the 2nd best since 2008. This is in line with the progression of the market year-to-date: up 16% to 365,090 units, here too the best result since 2010 and 2nd best since 2008. The Seat Ibiza has uncovered a newfound stability in pole position: #1 for the third consecutive month thanks to 3,486 sales and 4.2% while its big sister the Seat Leon remains #2 at 3,159 units and 3.8%. Both models therefore cement their domination year-to-date with 13,865 and 12,704 sales respectively.
The Fiat 500 is up to #13 in Spain this month.
The VW Polo delivers a very solid month in third place with 2,964 sales and 3.6% ahead of the VW Golf at 3.1% and the Opel Corsa at 2.6% while the Renault Clio is back up 3 spots on April to #6, enabling it to reclaim a spot in the year-to-date Top 10 at #9. The Peugeot 308 is up 10 ranks on last month to become the brand’s best-seller in Spain at #8, the Fiat 500 is up a gigantic 26 spots to #13, the Audi A3 up 10 to #16, the Dacia Duster stable at #25 vs. #33 year-to-date, the Citroen C3 Picasso up 36 to #31, Nissan Note up 44 to #40 and the Citroen C-Elysée up 11 to #54.
The All-new Nissan Pulsar makes its very first appearance in the Spanish ranking in May.
Among recent launches, notice the Mercedes GLA up 34 ranks to a fantastic 61st spot, the Ford Ecosport up 63 to #115 and the Porsche Macan up a further 11 to #124 and consolidating its Porsche best-seller status. We welcome 3 newcomers in the Spanish ranking this month: the Nissan Pulsar, unveiled this very month, lands at #189 with 24 sales, the Citroen C4 Cactus ranks 192nd at 22 units and the BMW X4 is #204 with 17 sales. Brand-wise, in spite of the Ibiza-Leon lockdown, Volkswagen reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date with sales up 37% in May, ahead of Seat (+40%) and Peugeot (+17%). Notice also Citroen up 47%, Renault up 33%, Dacia up 67%, Fiat up 68% and Mazda up 103%.
