Finland May 2014: VW Golf edges past Skoda Octavia

The Finnish new car market is down 0.7% year-on-year in May to 10,002 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 49,533 units, still up 5% on 2013. This month Toyota becomes the most popular carmaker in the country at 13.5% share vs. 12.4% for traditional leader Volkswagen while Skoda rounds up the podium at 10.1%. Nissan is up one further spot on April to #4 and 6.9% vs. #7 year-to-date, Mercedes is up two to #8, Renault up 5 to #16 and Jeep up 7 to #23.
Model-wise, the VW Golf edges past the Skoda Octavia to grab the pole position for only the 2nd time in the past 12 months with 559 sales and 5.6% share vs. 556 for the Octavia which however remains #1 year-to-date at 2,984 units (+106%) vs. 2,903 (+25%) for the Golf. Both the Nissan Qashqai and Toyota Avensis are up 38% on May 2013 at #3 and #4 respectively, the Toyota Auris is up 59% at #6 and the Skoda Rapid up 76% and 12 spots on April to break into the Finnish Top 10 for the first time at #8. Further down, the Mercedes C-Class is up 119% to #16, the Honda Civic up 49% to #18, the BMW 5 Series up 41% to #19 and the Opel Insignia up 97% to #23.
