The Emirati car market is up a very robust 16% year-on-year in 2013 to 361,328 registrations, and we witness lots of movement atop the models ranking for once! Surprise surprise: whereas it only ranked 4th in 2012, the Toyota Prado brilliantly takes the lead of the UAE annual sales charts in 2013 thanks to sales up a splendid 33% year-on-year to 18,209 units and 5% share. The traditional leader, the Toyota Hilux, is down 14% to #2 and 17,140 sales, now threatened by both the Toyota Corolla at 16,902 (+22%) and Land Cruiser at 16,001 (+14%). The Camry up 24% to #5 makes the Top 5 100% Toyota whereas the Japanese manufacturer ‘only’ managed to monopolise the Top 4 in 2012…
The most popular non-Toyota model in the country remains the Fuso Canter at #6 and 11,529 units (-6%) but the next four vehicles are catching up fast: the Nissan Patrol is up a tremendous 43% to #7, the Mitsubishi Pajero does even better at +82% to #8, the Nissan D22 Pick-up is up 57% to #9 and the Nissan Sunny N17 up 55% to #10. Other great performers in the UAE in 2013 include the Hyundai Elantra up 60% to #17, the Nissan Sentra landing at #20, the Toyota RAV4 up 86% to #34, Lexus ES up 90% to #39, Range Rover up 184% to #46, Renault Duster up 149% to #47 and the Toyota Avalon up 140% to #48.
Bonus track: the Lincoln MKZ is #264 in the UAE in 2013.
Finally, being the most “city-centric’ state in the region, the UAE models ranking features cars geared towards city use that would otherwise be less successful in more desertic parts of the Middle East. For example the Honda Civic is up 67% to #37, the VW Passat up 211% to #53, Nissan Micra up 77% to #60, Mitsubishi ASX up 265% to #65, Mazda6 up 92% to #74, BMW 3 Series up 49% to #78, Mini up 11% to #94, Lincoln MKX up 184% to #98 and the Mitsubishi Mirage landing directly at #100 for its first year in market.
