According to Malaysian website Motortrader, while it was expected that February would be another weak month after January in Malaysia because of the long Lunar new year holidays, new vehicle registrations were actually 445 units above January at 50,718 units, which is 12.5% higher than February 2013. The year-to-date total is up 1% on 2013 at 100,991 registrations. A year-on-year increase was to be expected as this time last year, politicians made promises of lowering prices of new vehicles and people decided to wait till after the elections as a result, creating some disruption in car sales. But the year-on-year gain was higher than expected. It should continue in March with the launch of two new models in the country: the new generations Mazda3 and Honda City.
The new generation Mazda3 launches this month in Malaysia.
Brand-wise, the market increase in February was lifted by great performances of the Top 3 best-sellers: Perodua is up to 15,609 sales and 30.8% market share vs. 24.1% in January, Proton is up to 10,684 units and 21.1% vs. 19.4% last month and Toyota is up to 7,721 sales and 15.2% vs. 13.1% in January. Other great performers include Hyundai-Inokom up 3 spots to #7, Volkswagen up one to #8, Peugeot up 3 to #11, Mercedes also up 3 to #13 and Lexus up 4 to #18.
