Sales of local models are down 2% year-on-year in October in South Korea to 122,027 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,132,422 units, down a mere 0.4% on 2012. Keep in mind these figures exclude imports. For the second time in the last 5 months after last June, the Hyundai Porter leads the models ranking this month thanks to an excellent 9,085 sales and 7.4% share. It is now up to #3 year-to-date at 75,450 units and 6.7%. Leader for the last two months, the Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra) is down to #2 in October with 8,521 sales and 7% and this enables the nameplate to jump ahead in the very tight race for the title of best-selling car in South Korea for 2013. Year-to-date Avante sales add up to 78,035 for a 6.9% market share vs. 77,550 and 6.8% for the Kia Morning. It is fair to say that the suspense will last until the last days of December!
The Hyundai Avante is now in the lead year-to-date at home.
Another very good showing for the Hyundai Grandeur at #3 with 8,115 units and 6.7%, while the Hyundai Sonata drops to #5 both in October and year-to-date. The Kia Sportage R lodges a very strong month at 4.5% share and #8 vs. 3.1% and #12 year-to-date, as do the SsangYong Korando Sports at #17 and 1.9%, Chevrolet Aveo at #25 and 1.2% and, strangely, the Hyundai Veracruz up 10 spots on September to #29, potentially the last runout stock being discounted.
