Another disappointing month for new car sales in Italy: the 41st consecutive year-on-year drop at -6% to 111,744 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,117,516 units, down 8% on 2012. UNRAE’s prediction for the Full Year 2013 now stands at 1.3 million sales, the weakest annual total in Italy in 35 years! In this dark context, Italian car buyers seem to have defaulted to local models: in October the Top 5 best-sellers are 100% Italian for the third time in the last 6 months (with last May and July), whereas this had not happened in the last 16 years! The Fiat Panda unsurprisingly leads the way at 8% share ahead of the Fiat Punto at 4.5% (its third lowest share ever), the Lancia Ypsilon at 3.5% and the Fiat 500L and 500 both at 3.3%.
The Fiat 500L is above the 500 for the 4th consecutive month in Italy.
The rest of the Top 10 is uneventful but below we have some interesting developments: finally free from stock issues, the Citroen C3 is back up 8 spots on September to knock on the Top 10’s door at #11, the Renault Captur continues to progress, up 3 ranks to #14 with 1,818 sales and 1.6% and the Peugeot 2008 shoots up 25 spots to break into the Italian Top 20 for the very first time at #17 with 1,645 units and 1.5% share. The success of the new French small SUVs is spreading across Europe as we speak… Notice also the Chevrolet Spark up one rank to #22 and the Chevrolet Trax up 13 to a best-ever #40.
