Once again the Mexican new car market is in great shape, up 3% year-on-year in July to 86,645 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 588,632 units, up 9% on 2012. After 19 consecutive months of reign, the Chevrolet Aveo is upset by the VW Clasico this month, with the latter selling 4,682 units for a 5.4% market share (up 45% on July 2012) vs. 4,315 and 5% for the Aveo. It’s the first time since November 2011 that the Clasico manages to rank #1 in Mexico, and also the first time since November 2011 that the Aveo is not #1. Based on photos taken by my friend David C in Mexico City it’s fair to say the Clasico can thank taxi companies for its newly acquired pole position. Year-to-date however, the Aveo is still #1 by far with 35,465 sales and 6% vs. 30,548 and 5.2% for the Clasico.
The Nissan Tsuru continues to amaze given its old age, up a whopping 61% year-on-year to #3 at 4,047 units and 4.7% while the Nissan Versa is up 4% at #4 and the VW Nuevo Jetta up 23% at #5. The other great performer this month – and potentially part of the explanation for the Aveo falling down from its throne – is the Chevrolet Sonic beating its ranking record in the country for the 2nd month in a row, up two ranks on June to #6 thanks to 2,362 sales and 2.7%. The Honda CR-V is up a fantastic 59% year-on-year to get back inside the Top 10 at #7 and the Nissan Sentra is down 2 to #11 in spite of sales up 85% year-on-year.
