New light vehicle sales in Canada are up a very healthy 7% year-on-year in July to 159,186 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,043,804 units, up 3% on 2012. No surprises in pole position: the Ford F-Series leads the way by far but shock, horror: for the first time in 2013 it is down year-on-year in July at a still very robust 10,144 sales. Year-to-date, the F-Series is still up 14% on 2012 at 71,821 units and still on track to break its own annual sales record by the time 2013 comes to an end. In fact pick-up trucks are pausing somehow this month in Canada apart from the Dodge Ram up a fantastic 21% at #2: the GMC Sierra is down 2% and two spots to #7 and the Chevrolet Silverado down 1% and 4 ranks to #12.
The Mazda CX-5 breaks into the Canadian Top 20 for the first time this month.
The big event this month is the Honda Civic reclaiming the title of best-selling passenger car year-to-date away from the Hyundai Elantra: thanks to 6,065 sales in July (+36%) vs. 5,409 (+25%) for the Korean, the Civic totals 34,623 units (-5%) so far in 2013 vs. 34,272 (+25%) for the Elantra. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, the battle is far from being won, but a 19th consecutive year at #1 is now in the realm of possibles for the Civic. Other great performers this month include the Honda CR-V up 39% on July 2012 to #10, the Hyundai Santa Fe up 36% to #14, the Mazda CX-5 up 102% to break into the Canadian Top 20 for the first time at #20 and the Honda Accord up 109% to #23. Finally, notice the Buick Encore up 34 spots to #91 and the Fiat 500L up 82 to #129.
