Spain May 2013: Opel Corsa distant leader, Nissan Juke in Top 10

The little hope last month’s 11% year-on-year gain gave us is dashed in May with Spanish new car sales back into negative at -3% to 70,624 registrations, the worst May figure in over 20 years. The year-to-date total now stands at 313,824 units, down 6% on 2012 and here again the lowest level in at least 20 years. Mini event atop the models ranking: for the second time in the last 3 months the Opel Corsa is the most popular model in the country thanks to 3,239 sales and 4.6% share, and is now #2 year-to-date at 10,405 units and 3.3% vs. #6 in 2012. Leader last month, the Seat Ibiza doesn’t fall too far and ranks 2nd in May with 2,372 sales and 3.4%, holding onto its 2013 year-to-date pole position at 11,070 units and 3.5%. The VW Golf is up 3 spots to land on the third step of the podium with 2,172 sales and 3.1% while the Ford Fiesta impresses by gaining 7 ranks on last month to rank #4.

After the Qashqai which keeps on giving 6 years after launch, it looks like Nissan is becoming an expert an small SUVs that build their success in the long term: 3 years after its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show, the Nissan Juke breaks into the Spanish Top 10 for the very first time, up an impressive 19 spots on April to #9 at 1,569 units and 2.2%! Notice also the Ford C-Max up 9 to #11, the Hyundai i30 up 17 to #14, Dacia Sandero up 22 to #16, Mercedes C-Class up 27 to #32, Opel Mokka up 20 to #55, Mercedes CLA up 2 to #56, Peugeot 2008 up 92 to #82 and the Renault Captur down 38 to #101.
