Belarus Full Year 2012: Lada Priora now in pole position

In spite of a difficult economic situation, the new car market is up 19% year-on-year in Belarus in 2012 to 15,986 registrations (Passenger Cars only) and up 27% to 20,648 including Light Commercial Vehicles. The major event in Belarus this year is the exceptional form of Lada, back in pole position with sales more than doubling vs. 2011 to 2,951 units and 18.5% share vs. 10.3% in 2011. Renault is up 54% to #2 and Volkswagen is dethroned, up just 1% and down to #3. Notice also Kia up 62% to #4, Skoda up 37% to #5, UAZ up 198% to #7 and Volvo up 84% to #10.
Model-wise, the Lada Priora grabs the top spot thanks to sales up nearly 3-fold on 2011 to 1,231 units and 7.7% share while the 35 year-old Lada Niva is up an incredible 128% year-on-year to land in 2nd place with 871 sales and 5.4%. The VW Polo sedan is up 138% to round up the podium at 856 units and 5.4%.
Leader in 2011, the Renault Logan is up 20% but down 4 spots to #5 with 759 sales and 4.7%, followed by the Renault Sandero up 59%. Non-existant in 2011 (17 sales), the Kia Rio jumps up up to #6 at 562 units and 3.5%. Notice also the Skoda Octavia up 96% to #7, Kia Sportage up 60% to #8, Lada Samara up 69% to #10, UAZ 3151 up to #11, the Renault Duster landing directly at #13 for its first year in market, the Volvo XC60 up 1533% (!) to #14 and the Lada Granta at #16.
A very significant development could reshuffle the Belarus rankings in 2013: Chinese manufacturer Geely has just started local production of the SC7, sold under the Shanghai Englon brand in China, and will later on be expanding its locally-produced range with the plan to become a key player both in Belarus and Russia which is predicted to be the #1 export destination of its local production…
