Building on a very satisfying year in 2012, January new car sales are up 11% year-on-year to 143,643 regitrations, pushed by a 16% growth of private demand. After two months away from the top spot, the Ford Fiesta is back in its traditional pole position with 7,906 sales and 5.5%. But the two stars of the month both come from the local Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England factory… The Nissan Qashqai is up 3 spots on December to reach a best-ever #5 with 4,280 sales and 3%. The last and only times the Qashqai ranked that high were in June 2010 (5,636 units and 2.9%) and July 2010 (4,126 sales and 3%)…

Nissan Qashqai UK January 2013Nissan Qashqai

Already at an excellent #16 spot over the Full Year 2012, the Nissan Juke delivers a historical performance this month, breaking into the monthly UK Top 10 for the very first time at #9 with 2,522 units and 1.8%. In fact, I believe Nissan is the only Japanese manufacturer to have managed to place two models within the monthly UK Top 10, having done so last under the Datsun brand in 1983 with the Sunny and Cherry

Dacia Duster UK January 2013Dacia Duster

The Peugeot 208 ranks within the Top 10 for the second time ever after last September, hitting a best-ever #7 this month with 2,959 sales and 2.1%. Brand-wise, Vauxhall and Nissan are both up 51% year-on-year in January, Land Rover is up 34% to #12 and Suzuki up 43% to #21. Finally, Dacia makes its very first appearance in the UK brands ranking this month at #30 with 294 sales.

Red Beetle...yet again!

This post is sponsored by Volkswagen Behbehani Kuwait.

To try and repeat this performance for 2013 and also for the occasion of Hala Febrayer, this month in Kuwait Volkswagen Behbehani is offering astonishingly low prices on 3 of their best-sellers in the country…

Bulgaria January 2013: VW and Peugeot dominate weak month

Peugeot 301 Bulgaria January 2013Peugeot 301 and Partner

* See the Top 163 All-models and Top 31 All-brands by clicking on the title! Thanks Kaloyan *

It’s a shy start of the year for new car sales in Bulgaria with only 1,557 new vehicles estimated to have found a home in January. Volkswagen with 243 sales and 15.6% and Peugeot at 156 units and 10% are the winners this month while Great Wall, #2 in December, falls to #20 with only 16 sales as the Great Wall Steed, #1 last month, does not sell a single unit this month. This could be due to a break in the local factory production. If you have access to any explanation for this please do comment on this article so we can all know what’s happened!

The Dacia Logan MCV stays on top thanks to 76 units sold and 4.9%, and this month the Peugeot Partner brilliantly jumps into second place (vs. #28 in December) with 67 sales and 4.3% with the VW Caddy rounding up the podium once again at 52 units and 3.3%. The Kia Sportage is back up to its traditional 4th spot, the Opel Astra is up 14 ranks to #5 and the the VW Passat up 39 to #7. Further down, notice the Peugeot Bipper up 145 to #10, Ford Transit up 39 to #11, Peugeot 301 up 24 to #36 and Citroen C-Elysee up 111 to #47.

Morocco Full Year 2012: Renault Kangoo #1, 3 Dacias in Top 4!

Renault Kangoo Morocco 2012Renault Kangoo

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Juan Felipe *

Record year for new car sales in Morocco, up 19% year-on-year to 130,000 registrations. The Renault Group now has a tight grip on the Moroccan market, holding a whopping 36.6% share, but interestingly it’s the locally produced low-cost brand Dacia that is in the lead with 20.8% share ahead of Renault at 15.8%. The Renault Kangoo is the most popular model in the country with 12,933 sales and just under 10% of the market. It is followed by no less than 3 Dacias: this way the French-Romanian manufacturer does better in Morocco than it does ‘at home’ in Romania!

Dacia Duster Morocco 2012Dacia Duster

The Dacia Logan ranks #2 at 11,757 units and 9%, ahead of the Duster very impressive with 7,661 sales and 5.9% and the Sandero at 5,916 units and 4.5%. The Ford Fiesta brilliantly takes the 5th place thanks to 4,184 sales and 3.2%, with the Peugeot 206 at #6 and the Hyundai i10 at #7. Notice also the Nissan Qashqai at #9, the Fiat Doblo at #10 and the Renault Clio just outside the Top 10.

After growing by 15% over the first 6 months of the year thanks to bank credit starting to trickle in, new car imports in Nigeria are back down by 5% over the full year to 48,490 registrations. One brand stands out from the crowd: Toyota, up a massive 30% year-on-year to 19,755 sales or a mammoth 40.7% market share which is over 10 percentage points higher than in 2011 when it held 29.7% of the market. Far below we find Kia at 5,034 units and 10.4% and Hyundai at 4,259 sales and 8.8%, adding up to just over 19% vs. 28% in 2011. Ford is up 4% to 2,613 units thanks to the Ranger and Honda is up a huge 58% to 2,473 sales.

Sponsored post: Buying new or used: Thrills vs. Practicality

Used cars that are dependable. Picture courtesy

This post is sponsored by Car Loan World

There’s nothing quite like buying a new car. That feeling of being the first person to drive the car, seeing single digits on the mileage counter, smelling that new car smell, hearing the gentle thunk of new car doors closing. Buying a new car can be an awesome experience – but thinking practically, how does it stack up to buying a car that is used?

Upfront Costs: One of the first things nearly everyone thinks about when buying a new car is the price. It’s no secret that you will pay thousands of dollars more for a new car compared to the same model a few years older, so what makes up for the kicker that is new car depreciation?

Finance Costs: One benefit of buying new is the money you can save on car finance. Car loans providers often offer better interest rates on loans for new cars than for used cars. It’s up to you to work out whether the interest you save on your car loan makes up the higher upfront cost of the car.

Insurance Costs: Unfortunately, you may find that it costs more to insure a new car – usually because the car is worth more new. Chalk that win up to the used car board.

Safety: However, newer cars can be safer than older models. As manufacturers strive to obtain higher safety ratings, each model can become safer over the years. Compare the ANCAP safety rating of your new car with its predecessors to see if there are any improvements in the latest model.

Style: Fashions and trends develop over time. If you have a thing for the boxy cars of the eighties, then a used car could be for you – or, if you follow fashion and you like the sleeker lines of the latest models, then a new car may be a better option. Both can be obtained through purchase or car loans.

Fuel Efficiency: Another improvement that often comes with later model cars is improved fuel efficiency. Any manufacturer that wants that Federal Government Fuel Efficiency sticker will have to make changes to how well the car handles fuel – which should help you save money on petrol over time.

Modifications: One of the great things about buying a car new is the fact that you can customise it to suit you. You want metallic paint? You got it. You want leather interior? You got it. You want heated seats? You got it. As long as you have the money, and the manufacturer has the option, you can buy a car exactly the way you want it. The only downside is the amount of time you will wait for it to be delivered.

Warranties: Another upside of buying a new car is that you will be blessed with a full manufacturer’s warranty. This should cover most hiccups your car will face during the first few years of life. On the other hand, you might find a used car with warranty, with a little bit of research.

Peace of mind: One thing about buying a used car is that you don’t know what it’s been through. It might have had a rough time of it with previous owners, but you won’t know that until it breaks down in the middle of rush hour traffic. Remember, if you do buy a used car, get it checked over by an independent mechanic or have the NRMA do a vehicle inspection on it.

Netherlands LCV January 2013: Ford Transit Custom up to #12

Like Passenger Cars (-32%), Light Commercial Vehicle sales in the Netherlands are down a painful 29% year-on-year in January to 6,757 registrations. The VW Caddy remains the favourite with 1,061 sales and 15.7% followed by the VW Transporter at 967 units and 14.3%, both well above their FY2012 results respectively of 11.6% and 10.6%.

The Peugeot Partner brilliantly stays on the podium at #3 with 398 sales and 5.9% vs. #6 in 2012 while both the Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter are up 8 spots on December to rank #4 and #5 respectively. Outside the Top 10, the Ford Transit Custom takes off and gains 9 ranks on last month to reach the 12th place at 221 units and 3.3%, equal with the other successful newcomer of the last few months: the Mercedes Citan.

Macedonia January 2013: Police order sends Skoda Yeti #1

Skoda Yeti Macedonia January 2013Skoda Yeti

* See the Top 10 best-selling models and brands by clicking on the title! *

The Macedonian new car market starts the year in a pretty unusual way: up 13% year-on-year to 435 registrations, however this progression is only due to the delivery to the Minister of Interior of 150 Skoda Yeti. Without them, the market would be down 26% on January 2012… With the Yeti artificially at 35.6% market share (!), Skoda logically dominates the brands ranking for once with 176 sales and 40.5% ahead of Volkswagen at 14.3% and Ford at 4.8%.

This January figure should enable the Skoda Yeri to feature on the 2013 year-end podium even if it sells nothing all year… In 2nd place we find the VW Golf at 18 units and 4.1%, followed by the VW Passat at 3% and the Opel Astra at 2.3%. The Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Captiva and Skoda Octavia are equal #5 with 7 sales and 1.6% share.

France 1-18 February 2013: VW Golf still on podium

VW Golf France February 2013. Picture courtesy of L'Argus2Could the VW Golf finish the month on the podium for the first time ever in France?

* See the Top 10 best-selling models and brands by clicking on the title! *

The French new car market maintains itself at a reasonable -4% year-on-year over the first 18 days of February at 73,153 registrations. Peugeot is still in the lead thanks to sales up 17% to 12,672 units and 17.3% share, followed by Renault at 15.6% (-12%) and Citroen at 14.5% (-20%). Volkswagen continues to impress, up 3% to 7,757 sales and 10.6% while Dacia is up a huge 92% to 4,554 units and 6.2%. Model-wise, the Peugeot 208 is still in pole position with 4,364 sales and 6%, but with only 1,647 units and 4.9% over the last week, it is now threatened by the Renault Clio 4 at #2 with 3,888 sales and 5.3%, including a massive 2,470 and 7.3% in the last week.

Dacia Duster France February 2013bDacia Duster

The VW Golf also impresses and remains in third place thanks to 2,474 units and 3.4%. Chances are it will drop a few ranks by the time February comes to an end but if it does stay there it would be only the 2nd foreign model to manage to rank within the monthly podium in France after the VW Polo… Another brilliant performer over the period is the Dacia Duster: it sells 1,141 units for a 3.4% market share over the last week, bringing its total for February so far to 2,366 and 3.2%, up 91% year-on-year. Here too, if the Duster was to hold this position until the end of the month it would become its new best, with its current record being #5 in November 2011.

New Zealand Full Year 2012: Now with Top 295 All-models!

Geely LC New Zealand 2012The Geely LC ranked #242 in New Zealand in 2012.

* See the Top 295 All-models and Top 64 All-brands by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to Jared, for the first time on BestSellingCarsBlog I can share with you an All-models ranking for New Zeland! The only thing missing is LCV beyond the Top 50. The Kiwi ranking turns out to be quite different from its neighbour’s Australia. Apart from the fact that the Toyota Corolla has been leading for 5 consecutive years here whereas it was never crowned in Australia, the rest of the ranking also reveals some surprises: the Dodge Journey is still high up at #56 for example and some models make a noticeable appearance: the Geely LC at #242, MG 6 at #248, Geely MK at #261, Great Wall VX10 at #282 and Toyota Tundra at #290.
