The Finnish new car market is down 12% in 2012 to 109,856 registrations. This year the pole position is as unexpected as it is impressive: the Nissan Qashqai, which had never ranked #1 even in a monthly ranking in Finland before 2012, lodges an amazing year at 5,103 sales and 4.6%, up 16% on 2011. It topped the ranking for the first time ever in January, and then for 6 consecutive months from July onwards! It is the first time a Japanese model leads the Finnish year-end ranking since the Toyota Corolla in 2007. Leader last year, the Skoda Octavia is down 24% and one spot to #2 at 4,534 units and 4.1%, followed by the Toyota Avensis at 4,263 sales and 3.9%, down 7%.
Only one additional model gains ground in the Top 10: the Toyota Yaris is up 55% thanks to the new generation to #6 with 3,299 units and 3%. Notice also the Hyundai i20 up 8 spots to #17 and the Volvo V60 up 4 to #22. There are 6 newcomers in the Finnish Top 30 this year: the most impressive is by far the Kia Rio up 341% to #13 and 1,551 sales. The Honda CR-V is up 8% to #25, Audi A6 up 16% to #26, Honda Civic up 72% to #27, Kia Sportage up 29% to #29 and the BMW 3 Series is up 21% to #30.
