Now that October 2012 has been covered in detail, as is now the tradition on BSCB I go through the year-to-date worldwide ranking to keep you abreast of all the longer-term evolutions, and this month there is a lot of change atop the ranking. If the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra ranked above the Toyota Corolla for the month of October, this does not impact the Top 2 positions which are pretty much cemented for the rest of the year. The Corolla is still in pole position year-to-date at 938,507 sales, over 100,000 above the Ford Focus – an unsurmountable gap for the Ford…
Outstanding Chinese sales have pushed the Hyundai Elantra to #5 year-to-date
However below the two favourites, the cards are being redistributed: even though it is down to #7 in October, the VW Golf passes the Toyota Camry (itself down to #11 on the back of weak Chinese sales) to establish itself on the third step of the podium with 648,469 sales. The arrival of the 7th generation in Europe early in November should only help the Golf reaffirm this new worldwide ranking up until the end of the year. Now that China has a big green tick against it with a very successful launch of the last generation, the Hyundai Elantra is up 2 ranks year-to-date to #5 with 641,198 units and could pass the Camry – and even the Golf – if strong Chinese sales continue…
The Ford F-Series is undisturbed at #6 while the Chevrolet Cruze drops 2 spots to #7 year-to-date this month. Also on the back on extremely solid figures in China and 70,000+ worldwide sales performances this month, both the VW Passat (#8) and Jetta (#9) gain one rank, leaving the Ford Fiesta down 2 to #10. I told you the Top 10 had a bit of a shake this month! We have to go down the ranking to find other models gaining some significant ground: the Hyundai Tucson/ix35, Wuling Hongguang and Kia Cerato/K3 all up 3 to #32, #52 and #53 respectively.
Renault has cracked India single-handedly with the Duster: as a result the low-cost 4WD hits a best-ever #33 this month and is up 5 spots year-to-date to #58, as is the VW Lavida at #71. The Citroen C4 and Peugeot 308 are both up 4 to #75 and #86 respectively, the Hyundai Santa Fe is up 7 to #90, the BYD F3 up 5 to #132, the Peugeot 208 up 17 to #140 and Emgrand EC7 up 5 to #141.
Finally to give a bit of perspective to all this data madness: if the Corolla and possibly the Focus will be the only models to break the magical “million annual sales barrier” this year, so far after 10 months no less than 13 vehicles have sold over 500,000 units so far, 21 more than 400,000, 41 more than 300,000, 69 over 200,000 and 161 at least 100,000…
