No improvement in sight for the new car market in Portugal: sales are down 33% year-on-year in August to 5,443 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 68,103 registrations, down 40% on 2011. It now looks almost certain that the market will not pass the 100,000 annual units milestone in 2012 for the first time since 1985… Big event this month: after ranking #3 in June at 4.9% share and #2 in July at 5%, the Peugeot 208 grabs the Portuguese models pole position in August with 265 sales and 4.9%. Portugal is only the second country in the world after France where the Peugeot 208 has managed to top the ranking, and its very first foreign country.
The 208 is already #5 year-to-date at 2,009 units and 2.9%. In 2nd place both this month and year-to-date we find the Renault Clio with 256 sales and 4.7% adding up to 3,149 and 4.6% in 2012 so far, down less than the market at -29%. The Renault Megane rounds up the August podium at 210 units and 3.9%, it still leads the way year-to-date with 3,413 sales and 5%, albeit down a worrying 49% on 2011.
The Ford Fiesta is back up to #4 at 3.6% but its ytd total is down 59%. It is followed by the VW Golf, VW Polo which was #1 in July, Opel Corsa and Opel Astra. Notice also the Citroen C3 at #10, Chevrolet Cruze at #12, Chevrolet Aveo at #13 and Toyota Auris at #15. Audi places no less than 3 models in the Top 20: the A1 at #14, A3 at #17 and A4 at #18!
