The Australian market is euphoric this month, up 24% year-on-year and setting a new record for May at 96,069 registrations, helped by a backlog of orders due to last year’s Japanese quake and Thai floods now being filled. The year-to-date total stands at 435,288 units, up a brilliant 9% on 2011.

The Toyota Hilux breaks a few records: for the first time ever it manages to hold the Australian pole position twice in a row with 4,626 sales and 4.8%, its strongest volume in the country since June 2009 and its highest market share since November 2009… For the first time also sales of the 4WD version only, at 3,539, were enough to put the Hilux #1 overall! It is now #3 year-to-date with 3.5% share.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda3 is #2 again with 3,288 units and 3.4% and keeps the lead overall year-to-date at 17,889 sales and 4.1%. The Toyota Corolla rounds up the podium like last month with 3,155 units and 3.3%, followed by the Holden Cruze at 3.1%, beating its big sister the Commodore for the second month in a row and the third time this year.

Great Wall V-Series

The Toyota Yaris scores its best monthly volume since December 2010 at #11 with 1,826 sales and 1.9%, the Mazda CX-5 delivers its best monthly sales so far at 1,680 units and #12 and the Ford Focus is at its best since January 2008 with 1,667 sales at #13. The Ford Ranger is up to #14, the Nissan Dualis (aka Qashqai) up to #19, the Honda Civic up to #23, the Ford Falcon down to a devastating #28 and the Great Wall V Series up to #36 year-to-date.
