* See the updated 2011 World Top 105 best-selling models here *

Just a quick update to let you know that I have amended the Worldwide Top 100 models ranking I published yesterday with a couple more details, it is now actually a Top 105! This ranking will likely be updated a few more times over the next days/weeks as more official data keeps pouring in so I will let you know each time this happens. If you have access to official data that can make this ranking more accurate please do comment on here!

I have added a couple of Chinese LCVs that slipped through the cracks yesterday: the Foton Forland at #30 with an estimated 403,000 sales worldwide, the ChangAn Mini Bus which could include the ChangAn Taurus pictured above at #44 with an estimated 354,000 units and the DongFeng Mini Bus at #66 with an estimated 253,000 sales. The Mazda3 is now #39 at 381,780 units.

Also, thanks to the official Skoda Press Release provided by Robbie I have amended the Skoda Octavia sales to 389,000 which brings it up to #34.

You can see the amended World 2011 Top 105 article here

I have also published the amended Top 105 Ranking Table below for your reading pleasure.

North Korea: Pyeonghwa Samchunri should lead the ranking

The North Korean car market is very limited but seems to have enjoyed a mini-boom over the last couple of years as more cars can be seen in the formerly deserted streets of Pyongyang. Pyeonghwa Motors (meaning ‘Peace’ in Korean) was founded in 1999 and has the exclusive rights to car production, purchase and used car sales in North Korea and is only one of two car manufacturers in the country with Pyongsang Auto Works. Pyeonghwa produced an estimated 1,000 vehicles a year.

Pyeonghwa Motors is also currently the only company in North Korea, all sectors put together, to have got the right to advertise. A series of billboards and TV commercials (such as the one above) have been made in an effort to show residents that their country is able to produce products such as motor vehicles. The official Pyeonghwa website is here.

Pyeonghwa Hwiparam II

Pyeonghwa Hwiparam III

The Pyeonghwa Samchunri is a rebadged Jinbei Haise van (itself based on the 1989 Toyota Hiace), assembled under license from Brilliance China Auto. It should be by far the best-selling vehicle in North Korea, followed by the Pyeonghwa Hwiparam II, a rebadged Brilliance BS4, and the Pyeonghwa Premio CUV, a rebadged Huanghai Shuguan (with a Hyundai Santa Fe front and an old gen Kia Sorento back!). The Pyeonghwa Hwiparam III, based on the Brilliance FSV, is the brand’s most recent model and has gone on sale in 2011.

Pyeonghwa Premio

As far as imports are concerned, the best-sellers seem to logically be two popular models from neighbouring countries: the BYD F3, a success in China, and the Lada Priora, #2 in Russia. But no Japanese cars: in 2007, Kim Jong-Il ordered the confiscation of all Japanese-built vehicles… Export-wise, the Pyeonghwa sells the Premio pick-up in Vietnam through Mekong Auto.

Chile January 2012: Hyundai Accent & Chevrolet Sail shine

Hyundai Accent

* See the Top 10 best-selling passenger cars by clicking on the title! *

Excellent start of the year for the new generation Hyundai Accent: it takes the lead of the Chilean passenger cars ranking in January with 1,016 sales and is followed by the China-imported Chevrolet Sail at 979 units and the Nissan Tiida, leader in 2011, with 808 sales. The Kia Rio also excels thanks to the new generation now on sale and ranks 4th with 745 units sold in January.

Kia Rio

There are a couple of other newcomers in the Top 10: the Nissan March climbs to a very respectable 5th position with 685 sales and the Nissan Versa is #7 at 541 units. We welcome the Toyota Yaris back within the Top 10 thanks to its facelift at #6 with 656 sales while the Chevrolet Spark GT manages a solid 9th place at 495 units.

Nepal 2012: Hyundai i10 should lead the way, Eon arrives

Street scene in Kathmandu, Nepal

The next country under the spotlight this week is Nepal, where Hyundai has managed to establish itself solidly along with neighbours Maruti and Tata.

Hyundai i10

The last Nepalese official car sales figures date back to 2002 when the Hyundai Santro overtook the Maruti Alto to become the best-selling car in the country. If the Nepalese market has continued in the same vein during the last years, the Hyundai i10 could be leading the models ranking in 2011.

Hyundai Eon

Hyundai Santro, Eon and i10: the trio that should dominate Nepalese car sales

The Maruti 800, Swift, Wagon R, Tata Indica, Kia Rio and Hyundai Verna are also very well represented in the streets of Kathmandu (based on the observation of YouTube videos). Building on the success of the Santro and i10, it is reasonable to assume that the all-new Hyundai Eon should be starting with a bang right now. Nepal was also one of the first countries with Bhutan to import the Tata Nano a few months after it launched in India.

France 13-19 March 2012: Last days of glory for the Peugeot 207

Peugeot 207

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

New car sales in France are frankly in negative year-on-year again this week at 36,230 registrations, down 25%. Peugeot leads the manufacturers ranking with 16.2% share, ahead of Renault at 15.9% and Citroen at 14.4%. With the official launch of the Peugeot 208 imminent (29 March), it’s the last hurrah for its predecessor the Peugeot 207, #1 again this week with 1,922 sales and 5.3% share, just above the Renault Clio at 1,911 units.

VW Golf

The Citroen C3 rounds up the podium at 3.4%, followed by the Renault Megane at 3% and Scenic at 2.8%. For once, the VW Golf passes its little sister the Polo to become the best-selling foreign model in 6th position with 991 sales and 2.7%. Month-to-date the VW Golf has sold 2,566 units at 2.9% share for a 5th position that would be its highest ever in France if it manages to keep it until the end of the month, which is doubtful… Notice the Peugeot 3008 back in the Top 10.

The effects of floods in the country on pick-up production capacity have now well and truly passed and the ‘Pick-up hub of the world’ has its factories running at full throttle again, to satisfy planet-wide demand but also local purchases. Thai companies bought 46,205 locally-built pick-ups in February, up 447% on last November, 120% on last December and 8% on January. More significantly, the Thai pick-up market is up a massive 23% on February 2011!

Losing its crown in November to the Mitsubishi Triton and in December to the Isuzu D-Max, the recently facelifted Toyota Hilux has reclaimed its supremacy over the last 2 months, selling 17,584 units in February, up 19% year-on-year. The all-new Isuzu D-Max is not far behind in second place with 16,379 sales this month while the Mitsubishi Triton rounds up the podium at 5,694 units, up an impressive 33% year-on-year.

Chevrolet Colorado

The most impressive progression is without contest delivered by the all-new Chevrolet Colorado at 2,587 sales this month which is up a huge 211% on February 2011. Chevrolet has a target of 85,000 overall sales in Thailand for 2012, triple the 2011 figure (!) and the Colorado will be key in achieving this bold prediction.
